Preventing the spread of HIV infection is crucial to curbing the epidemic globally and in South Africa. PHRU is engaged in a number of research projects investigating novel approaches to prevention as part of its mission of reducing the impact of HIV.
PHRU’s prevention programme started in the early 2000s with the conduct of the first HIV vaccine trial in South Africa. Since then, our programme has expanded to include research into novel HIV vaccine compounds, preventing infection among discordant couples (also known as treatment as prevention), microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and a range of behavioural interventions.
