“One idea is that if you get as many people as possible tested and treated that’s prevention as well. It’s not just for the individual. You are going to bring down the levels of the virus in the community. Even if a lot of people are infected, if they’re virally suppressed their chances of spreading the virus become that much smaller. That will turn the tide, because where is the virus going to go? That’s a little bit of a pipe dream but one can always dream.”

Dr Lerato Mohapi is a medical doctor and has been involved in HIV/AIDS research since 1990. As the Director of Adult Clinical Trials, Treatment and Care Programme at PHRU, Dr. Mohapi directs the Adult Treatment Access Programme and PHRU’s adult clinical trials. She serves as the site leader for the Division of AIDS (DAIDS) funded clinical trials group and has acted as Principal Investigator for 23 of the 34 clinical trials she has been involved in since joining PHRU in 1997. Dr. Mohapi began her work in the HIV/AIDS field managing a community-based HIV prevention programme that provided after-hours HIV counselling and testing, family planning and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment to commercial sex workers and their clients, youth and the gay community.
