About Us

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Unit is recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adults and children with HIV and has been involved in research, training, policy formation, and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.  In recent years the work of the Unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research, and policy development. Additionally, the Unit has developed an HIV Vaccine Clinical Trials Unit (HVCTU) and began HIV vaccine clinical trials in 2001. The PHRU Kliptown site is one of the Unit research sites with a history of conducting the various aforementioned clinical research with the aim of supporting the improvement of our community’s health.

Participation within HIV and COVID-19 vaccine trials

PHRU Kliptown is currently involved in HIV vaccine clinical trials (the Uhambo trial [HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) 702 study], the Imbokodo trial [HVTN 705]), and COVID-19 vaccine trials (the ChAdOx nCoV-1 trial and the ENSEMBLE VAC31518COV3001 study). The site is currently recruiting participants for ENSEMBLE and is specifically looking for community members aged 18 and above. People over 60 years of age and those with comorbidities (for example, high sugar [diabetes], high blood pressure [hypertension], or HIV) may also be eligible to participate in the vaccine trial.
